Showcasing the beauty of Hanbok in the easternmost point of Korea!
- Promoting the beauty of Hanbok in the easternmost point of Korea! -

The 2023 Dokdo Hanbok Fashion Show,, sponsored by Gyeongsangbuk-do, got underway on August 30 at various locations across Ulleungdo Island.

Hanbok designer Lee Sun-young, known for her patterns inspired by the Taegeukgi and Dokdo Island, showcased more than 50 Hanbok dresses designed and produced with the magnificent scenery of Ulleungdo Island, including Chotdaebawi, Samseonam, and Dodong Port, in mind. The sheer diversity and beauty of Hanbok garments in different patterns and shapes gave the audience a chance to once again promote Hanbok as a unique and traditional type of Korean clothing.

Lee, a Hanbok designer who was featured in the fashion show, holds a design patent on her own Taegeukgi Hanbok design, and she has led major Hanbok fashion shows in both Korea and abroad. Previously, Lee also hosted the worlds first Hanbok fashion show using virtual humans.

Gyeongsangbuk-do has long been the heart of traditional culture and content for Hangeul (Korean alphabet), Hansik (Korean cuisine), Hanok (Korean architecture), and Hanbok (Korean clothing). Copies of the Hunminjeongeum Haerye and Gansong were discovered in the Province, and the three major traditional cookbooks, Suunjabbang, Eumsikdimibang, and Onjubeop, were published in Gyeongsangbuk-do as well. Hanok villages such as Hahoe Village and Yangdong Village, registered as UNESCO World Heritage sites, are here in Gyeongsangbuk-do, which is also a renowned producer of traditional textiles such as silk, synthetic silk, and Sambe (hemp fiber).

To revitalize its Hanbok culture and industry, Gyeongsangbuk-do Province created the Hanbok Culture Creative Space in collaboration with the Korea Hanbok Promotion Institute. The Hanbok Culture Creative Space offers learning and cultural programs for Hanbok experts and elementary, middle, and high school students across the Province.

Gyeongsangbuk-do also has a traditional clothing industry revitalization project and various Hanbok culture content projects to support the creative endeavors made by local Hanbok producers.

The Director of Culture, Tourism and Sports of Gyeongsangbuk-do said, In order to popularize and make Hanbok, a core part of our K-culture, something people can wear every day, we want to develop garments that are comfortable to wear and not something that’s reserved for special occasions. Our goal is to turn Hanbok culture and industry into a future growth engine for our Province going forward.
