Gyeongsanbuk-do (Gyeongbuk) hosted the 2025 Visit Gyeongbuk Year Proclamation Ceremony on November 11 at The K Hotel Gyeongju, with over 300 people in attendance, including those from tourism businesses, the Visit Gyeongbuk Year Promotion Committee, the World Korean Women Association, Gyeongsangbuk-do Culture and Tourism Organization, 22 city and county leaders, and tourism officials.

The 2025 Visit Gyeongbuk Year has been designated to promote Gyeongbuks tourism appeal to the world in the context of the upcoming APEC Summit, which will be held in Gyeongju in November 2025.

The proclamation ceremony began with the recognition of meritorious individuals in conjunction with the 51st Tourism Day celebration, followed by the oath-taking ceremony of public relations supporters group consisting of the Gyeongbuk Travel Reporters and Media Local Creators, the presentation of the tourism industry transformation strategy by the Director of the Gyeongbuk Culture, Tourism and Sports Bureau, and the report on the performance of 22 cities and counties in the province to successfully manage the 2025 Visit Gyeongbuk Year.

The slogan, Its time to visit Gyeongbuk, emphasizes that if you want to deeply understand and experience Korea, you should come to Gyeongbuk now. It ranked first in the public preference survey, which included foreign respondents.

The slogan design draws inspiration from the Five Hans (Hangeul, Hanbok, Hansik, Hanok, Hanji), which symbolize Gyeongbuk as the birthplace of K-culture. The T represents the roof tiles of a Hanok, emphasizing Gyeongbuks role as a historical center. The G reflects the flowing sleeves of a Hanbok, symbolizing tradition, while to is depicted as a rising red sun over Gyeongbuk, representing the spirit of Korea.

Gyeongbuk, with the upcoming openings of the Daegu-Gyeongbuk New Airport and Ulleung Airport, is poised to benefit from unprecedented tourism infrastructure and exceptional tourism resources. Coupled with the opportunity presented by hosting the APEC Summit, Gyeongbuk has established its vision as a Global Top 10 Tourism Destination in Harmony with K-Culture.“ For 2025, it announced these ambitious goals: attracting 100 million tourists, encouraging stays of three days or longer, generating KRW 5 trillion in tourism revenue, and achieving a 100% revisit rate.

Furthermore, to achieve its vision and goals, Gyeongbuk will focus on five key strategies: 1) Realizing Only One Gyeongbuk tourism; 2) Expanding high value-added tourism content; 3) Targeting global markets with aggressive marketing; 4) Developing a smart tourism city that is ideal for solo travelers; and 5) Innovating and advancing a new tourism industry ecosystem. Through these efforts, Gyeongbuk aims to embark on a new leap forward in tourism, as it aspires to become one of the worlds top 10 tourist destinations.

The event featured participation from mayors and governors of 22 cities and counties, tourism businesses, the Promotion Committee, and the World Korean Women Association, uniting their commitment to the success of the 2025 Visit Gyeongbuk Year. A performance symbolized this display of unity by planting a flag that bears the events slogan into a replica of a glass bead excavated from the tomb of King Michu, representing Gyeongjus Silk Road heritage. This act triggered a video projection of light radiating dynamically from Gyeongbuk, the heart of K-tourism, to the world.

Lee Cheol-Woo, Governor of Gyeongbuk, stated, The year 2025 marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of Gyeongju Bomun Tourist Complex, the nation’s first tourism district, highlighting Gyeongbuk as the birthplace of K-tourism. He emphasized, Cultural tourism is now a premier resource for generating national wealth. Leveraging the APEC Summit as a turning point, Gyeongbuk will rise as one of the world’s top 10 tourism destinations, and become a leading example of developing tourism as South Korea’s future growth industry.
