A Special Journey Through the Geological Grand Expedition: Rediscovering Gyeongbuks Geological Value
- 160 participants from all over the country embarked on a three-night, four-day exploration (familiarization tour) of five geological parks in Gyeongbuk -

Gyeongsangbuk-do (Gyeongbuk) is launching the Gyeongbuk Geological Grand Expedition across eight cities and counties with geological parks: namely, Pohang, Gyeongju, Mungyeong, Uiseong, Cheongsong, Yeongdeok, Uljin, and Ulleung.

This Geological Grand Expedition is divided into three regions: the island area (Ulleungdo and Dokdo), the inland area (Mungyeong, Uiseong, and Cheongsong), and the East Coast area (Pohang, Gyeongju, Yeongdeok, and Uljin).

The expedition for the island region officially began with a kickoff ceremony held at the Ulleung County Community Center on November 26, marking the start of the Geological Grand Expedition.

The inland region commenced its expedition with a kickoff ceremony at the Uiseong Jomunguk Museum on October 3, while the East Coast region began its journey with a ceremony at the Kolon Hotel in Gyeongju on October 10, followed by their respective schedules.

The Geological Grand Expedition recruited participants by region from July to early September. A total of 517 applications were submitted nationwide. Based on factors such as motivation stated in the applications, a final group of 160 participants was selected: 40 for the island region, and 60 each for the inland and East Coast regions.

Participants will explore geological parks in their assigned regions over a three-night, four-day journey with experts. During this period, they will engage in various activities, learn about the value of natural heritage, and gain a deeper understanding of the importance of environmental protection.

Meanwhile, Gyeongbuk first introduced the East Coast Geological Grand Expedition in 2016, combining geological tourism with a cross-country expedition that focused on the East Coast. This was a national first, and it has been held annually since.

The Geological Grand Expedition is a large-scale exploration (familiarization tour) that allows participants to experience various geological landmarks in Gyeongbuks East Coast region through a combination of walking tours and some vehicle travel.

Starting this year, Gyeongbuk is expanding the existing East Coast Geological Grand Expedition to cover the entire region. This initiative provides opportunities for elementary school students and their parents to explore the areas outstanding natural heritage, which is aligned with government and Gyeongbuk policies to address low birth rates. It also aims to promote and revitalize the provinces geological parks simultaneously.

The Director of the Gyeongbuk Climate and Environment Bureau stated, The Geological Grand Expedition, a participatory exploration program that has received high praise for representing the East Coast, will be expanded to include geological parks throughout Gyeongbuk, including Ulleung, Cheongsong, Uiseong, and Mungyeong. This expansion aims to strengthen publicity for the geological parks, which are home to Gyeongbuk’s outstanding natural heritage, and to promote nature conservation and the eco-friendly utilization of tourism resources.
